Eventually, he was afflicted with a severe illness that caused him great suffering. Some traditions suggest it was a skin disease that disfigured him and led people to shun him. His condition became so dire that he was abandoned by all except his devoted wife, Rahma. Despite these immense hardships, Ayyub (AS) remained steadfast in his faith. He never questioned Allah’s wisdom and continued to express gratitude for the blessings he had previously enjoyed. His prayer during this period is recorded in the Quran: "Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful." (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:83)

Rahma’s Devotion and the Oath of Ayyub (AS)

Throughout these trials, Rahma stood by her husband, caring for him and seeking ways to provide for their needs. She worked tirelessly to support them, often facing humiliation from the community. However, one day, she did something that led Ayyub (AS) to make an oath to strike her. The exact nature of Rahma's actions is disputed among scholars. While the Quran does not provide explicit details, some interpretations suggest that Rahma, out of desperation and love for her husband, may have been deceived by Satan. Traditions attributed to Ibn Abbas and some of the Tabi'een suggest she was misled into either suggesting a cure for Ayyub (AS) that involved compromising their devotion to Allah (e.g., not saying "Bismillah" or attributing healing to Satan) or questioning his continued patience. Others believe she simply asked Ayyub (AS) to pray for relief from his suffering, which he interpreted as a lapse in faith. Regardless of the details, Ayyub (AS), in a moment of frustration, vowed to strike her. However, when his trials ended, and he had to fulfill his oath, Allah provided a merciful solution: "And take in your hand a bunch [of grass] and strike with it and do not break your oath." (Surah Sad, 38:44) By striking her lightly with a bundle of grass, Ayyub (AS) fulfilled his vow without causing her harm, demonstrating Allah’s mercy and wisdom. This also demonstrates the importance of being good to your wife, and never harming her. Even in a situation where one has made an Oath with Allah, they should still do everything in their power to make sure no harm befalls her.

Allah’s Response to Ayyub

After years of enduring his trials with steadfast faith, Ayyub (AS) turned to Allah in heartfelt supplication, seeking relief. Allah responded with compassion and instructed him: "Strike [the ground] with your foot; this is a [spring for] a cool bath and drink." (Surah Sad, 38:42) When Ayyub (AS) struck the ground, a spring of water gushed forth. By bathing in and drinking from this water, he was miraculously healed of his afflictions. Allah restored his health and granted him even more blessings than he had before. The Quran states: "And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for those of understanding." (Surah Sad, 38:43)
